Tell us about yourself… Who are you and why did you pursue this internship?
Hi! My name is Natalie Gomez and I’m a junior at the University of California, Irvine, pursuing a degree in psychology and a minor in political science. I have an obsession with true crime, coffee and the color yellow. Besides interning for Embrace Autism, I am a copyediting intern at the Cove @ UCI. My copy editing internship actually led me to pursue Embrace Autism’s because I wanted to experience being in a position where I could create my own content, rather than just editing someone else’s content. When I found this internship, I knew I had to apply immediately as it checked every box in my “what I want to do/learn before I graduate college” list.
Why Embrace Autism? What made you want to get involved with a group dedicated to helping society embrace autism?
When Sandra first described her plans for Embrace Autism to me there was no doubt in my mind that this would be a great organization to get involved with. Coming from a background with very little knowledge of the autism community, I wanted to be able to learn more and simultaneously teach others about how we can embrace autism together.
Aspirations? What are some long-term goals you have?
I hope to find a career in a creative space, somewhere where I can create content and where I can feel like I have had even a slight impact on the world. I’m not sure what this career is at the moment, but I know I would like to work and live in a metropolitan area (preferably with a coffee shop not too far away). Speaking about coffee, I also want to travel to at least five foreign countries and try their coffees. I have currently only been to Greece, but plan on visiting many more countries within the next couple of years.
What’s your favorite thing about the internship so far?
My favorite aspect of the internship so far has been being able to take part in the early stages of Embrace Autism as an organization and seeing it slowly blossom into a valuable resource for families affected by autism and other developmental disorders.
Fun fact: Tell our readers something interesting about yourself.
I love going to the movie theatre alone. It’s a completely different viewing experience when you’re able to watch a movie without being with another person and I would 10/10 recommend it.
