Get to know Embrace Autism: Intern Jillian Trevarthen

Tell us about yourself… Who are you and why did you pursue this internship?
Hi friends! My name is Jillian Trevarthen, and I’m a 3rd year Communication and Sociology major at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Alongside my work as an intern for Embrace Autism, I am a full-time Resident Assistant and Vice President of Administration of Alpha Kappa Psi, a co-ed professional business fraternity on campus.jiliam_1

In my free time, I enjoy going to concerts, doing arts and crafts, and spending time at the beach with my friends. I am pursuing this internship because I would like to have a career working in Public Relations for a non-profit agency. With my many years of experience volunteering for local awareness and support organizations, along with my excellent communication skills and creativity, I knew that getting involved with Embrace Autism would be a fantastic way for me to gain both personal and professional fulfillment.

Why Embrace Autism? What made you want to get involved with a group dedicated to helping society embrace autism?
In 2012, my father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and although it has been a very challenging for our family to deal with, we have found joy and empowerment through getting involved with the local MS support group. As a result, I have had the opportunity to participate and volunteer at many charity events and support walks through the years that gave me a deep-seeded passion for helping those with disabilities. Since coming to college, I have had a growing interest in the field of business, causing me to seek out opportunities for work in public relations and marketing. So, as I’m sure you could imagine, finding a Public Relations Research internship with a disability support organization was a dream come true for me. I am thrilled that I have the amazing chance to work with such amazing people for such an incredible cause, all while giving me the experience I need to pursue my goals.

Aspirations? What are some long-term goals you have?
In my near future, I will be holding an internship at a local marketing firm, studying abroad in the United Kingdom, and eventually graduating from UCSB (if everything goes to plan). After college, I hope to be a part of the 2019 TeachForAmerica corps. Further along the line, I hope to be working in public relations for a non-profit organization. I also hope to visit every single continent before I’m 40 years old!

What’s your favorite thing about the internship so far?
My favorite thing about this internship so far is being able to contribute to the growth of a start-up non-profit organization and watch it thrive before my eyes. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn blogging skills, improve my graphic design skills, and gain an understanding of the business-side of a growing non-profit.

Fun fact: Tell our readers something interesting about yourself.
When I was a kid, I used to spend time in my mom’s Kindergarten classroom a lot, and I would constantly glance at the colorful alphabet poster she had on the wall. As a result, I am to this day able to recite the alphabet backward extremely fast!
